Kate Duncan is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and Nationally Certified Counselor with over decades of experience providing consistent, ethical, and trauma-informed mental health care across outpatient, inpatient, and emergency settings. She has worked extensively with adolescents and adults presenting with trauma-related symptoms, mood and anxiety concerns, acute stress, and complex psychosocial histories (e.g., psychosis, personality disorders). Kate is known for her steady clinical presence, long-term dedication to the organizations and clients she serves, and her ability to support clients through both periods of crisis and long-term growth.
Her clinical approach prioritizes careful assessment and symptom management over the overuse of diagnostic labels. While diagnosis is used thoughtfully and when clinically or administratively necessary, Kate views it as a flexible framework rather than a defining identity. Treatment focuses on how symptoms impact daily functioning, emotional regulation, and relationships, with the goal of reducing distress, increasing stability and insight, and strengthening coping capacity. This approach allows clients to feel understood and fully supported.
Kate’s work is grounded in trauma-informed care. She completed a Graduate Certificate Program in Working with Survivors of Violence, Torture, and Trauma through the University of Maryland, further deepening her understanding of the physiological, emotional, and relational impacts of trauma. Her experience spans high-acuity and complex presentations, including individuals with trauma histories, recent hospitalizations, safety concerns, substance use issues, and severe emotional dysregulation. Across settings, she emphasizes safety, collaboration, and respect for each client’s lived experience.
In addition to direct clinical care, Kate has served in leadership and supervisory roles, mentoring developing clinicians with an emphasis on ethical practice, sound clinical judgment, and restraint in diagnostic decision-making. She values consistency, therapeutic alliance, and continuity of care, believing that meaningful change occurs within stable, trusting therapeutic relationships.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Kate was in the process of developing an Animal Assisted Therapy program in collaboration with her dog, Liz, recognizing the therapeutic benefits of regulated, supportive human-animal interactions—particularly for clients with trauma histories. While the program was paused due to pandemic-related constraints, this work reflects her commitment to thoughtful, evidence-informed, and creative approaches to healing that prioritize safety, connection, and nervous system regulation.
